Even in the days of Facebook, Twitter, and other social media you can still be oblivious to keeping in touch with friends. Yesterday I heard that one of them, Matt Duvall was found unresponsive and pronounced dead soon after.
I knew Matt from the old Nuclear Nutrition forum as well as the forum site Muscle Mayhem….he was always down to earth and was pretty open in giving advice to the folks down there along with telling the stories of Trevor’s “Beyond Failure” training system. He got his pro card in the IFBB in 2003 by winning the NPC Nationals in a very dominating manner however he did not have much success in the pro leagues and decided to become a pro wrestler. He wrote me one day wanting some advice on the industry since I had spent some time in the business and I was more than happy to oblige considering all the training advice he gave me over the years. Unfortunately, due to some assholes at the Getbig forum , he decided to no longer post anything and mainly just kept contact with folks in his circle. The last time I had heard from him was in 2009 when he was wrestling for Prime Time Wrestling out in Michigan and he was pursuing a number of business interest. Here’s a clip of one of his matches below. He was still a huge mofo and he was obviously enjoying life.
After that time, I didn’t keep in touch with him at all for the most part which I wish I did now. Even though there are so many people in the bodybuilding industry, you figure that you’ll run into him at the next event or show. Ironically I would have likely ran into him at the Arnold Classic next week to up on things and find out how the wrestling business was treating him. Unfortunately that’s is no longer going to be possible.
Folks, its just a cruel reminder that time is nothing more than the grains of sand falling in an hourglass that cannot be turned over and once all of the sand is gone, there is no more. Don’t wait until the sand is gone, take the time to follow up with old friends.
Rest in Peace Matt and thanks for all the advice you gave me over the years
